B.S. in Computer Science
Empower your future with cutting-edge technology education
SXU's Bachelor of Science in Computer Science is designed for students passionate about technology and problem-solving. It is ideal for those who aspire to develop software, understand complex algorithms, and drive innovation in various industries. Graduates will have a solid foundation in computer science principles, hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies, and the ability to adapt to the rapidly changing tech landscape.
Why Earn Your B.S. in Computer Science?
Software development is so much more than just coding. A four-year degree in computer science gives you time to develop your mind and take a disciplined approach to thinking and problem-solving. Hands-on activities in class give you time to learn skills in the presence of technical experts to help you every step of the way.
About the Program
Learn in-demand technical skills while practicing process skills like teamwork, critical thinking, and communication. Core coursework in programming, data structures, databases, and networking builds on broadly applicable analytical skills. The curriculum is aligned with industry standards and informed by SXU alumni already in industry, and the full-time faculty members hold doctorate degrees with industry background in their fields.
Most courses in the program are offered with hands-on labs that simulate real-world problems and scenarios that provide students with practical learning experience. Our instructional lab (S-104) has state-of-the-art computers for in-class work and projects. The lab is designed with collaboration in mind. In addition, students can join Cougar Code, a registered student organization (RSO) that fosters collaboration and development within the field.
SXU's Computer Science (CS) program provides independent studies, special topic courses, and internships along with internship credit. A capstone course is required for the computer science major. Students work in teams to create a medium-sized software project to solve a real-world problem. In addition, students will enhance their learning experiences through research initiatives, collaborative projects, and guest speakers. Faculty members supervise trips to conferences that provide additional academic and professional growth.
- Students will apply knowledge of how software runs on hardware.
- Students will justify the choice of a data structure to solve a problem.
- Students will discuss an informed ethical decision in the context of computing.
- Students will design a relational database from requirements.
- Students will implement an object-oriented design to solve a software problem.
- Students will integrate knowledge in designing and building a real-world project.
Prospective students should choose Saint Xavier University (SXU) for their CS and CIS degrees because it offers a unique blend of classroom learning and experiential opportunities, ensuring well-rounded graduates. The faculty at SXU possess the expertise to create challenging, interactive, and student-focused courses.
